Mend your compost in summer
August is the month of summing up the results of the garden. And preparing for the next season. And that means it’s time to make compost for the beds for the next year.
Now is the perfect time, since every couple of weeks you have to mow the grass, collect fallen leaves, garlic and onion tops remain, tomato tops remain from the stepsons of tomatoes. Compost also loves food waste.
Thus, the biggest advantage of compost is getting rid of waste and processing it into fertilizer. And the site is clean, and there is great benefit in the next summer cottage season.
Compost is obtained from the decomposition of plant residues. And there is a magic in this: from unnecessary residues, very valuable soil for the site is obtained.
The main condition is a sufficient amount of nitrogen, which helps bacteria do their job.
It is recommended to choose a place for the compost heap away from the active life of the garden, since an unpleasant odor may be released during the process.
But lowlands are not recommended to avoid flooding by rain.
Next, a "sandwich" is created in the selected place:
- a layer of organic materials: leaves, grass, tops, household waste 20 cm;
- a layer of soil 5 cm.
The higher is the pile, the better the decomposition process will go. However, the process of shrinkage of the pile is inevitable, so the most suitable height is considered to be 1.5-2 m.
layer must be watered. And it will be very useful to add potassium humate «Bioresource» when watering: 2-3 caps are added to a watering can of water.
It is also recommended to add any nitrogen fertilizers. And if you add potassium humate «Bioresource» of the brands «Rich Harvest» or «Effective Feeding», then they already contain nitrogen available to microorganisms, and there is no need to add additional nitrogen fertilizers.
Watering starts the "burning" process in the pile, and then decomposition.
When these processes start, the compost pile heats up in the middle. And if you cover the pile with skin and make a hole, you can plant zucchini or pumpkin in it. These plants are quite climbing. Therefore, planting them in a compost pile will save space on the site and hide the not very nice-looking waste.
Leaving the pile until spring, the next season we get a dark mass of fertilizers - humus.
Humus is ideal for fertilizing beds and soil in a greenhouse, which will significantly improve soil fertility and enhance the growth and development of plants.
