Strawberry – «straw berry».
June is the main month of the strawberry beds. June 18 is strawberry day in Russia.
The rainy and cool summer is not encouraging, gardeners are seriously afraid that they may be left without a strawberry harvest - usually in June we begin to collect the first harvest, but now it has barely begun to fill. And because of the rains, the berries can begin to deteriorate and rot as soon as they begin to ripen. Should we be afraid, and what should we do to preserve the harvest, how to care for strawberries in June.
1. Mulch the ground
The ground under the bushes must be mulched so that the berries do not lie in the dirt.
Strawberry is translated from English as «straw berry» for a reason - straw or dry hay is placed under it so that the berries do not lie on the ground.
Thus, two birds with one stone are killed at once, even three:
- berries remain clean
- the possibility of gray mold infection is reduced
- it becomes difficult for slugs to get close to the berries - mulch makes it difficult for them to approach, unlike clean soil.
A fairly good mulch option is last year’s fallen leaves. By collecting the leaves at the beginning of summer, if they are left somewhere, you will also get organic fertilizer.
2. Feed. Potash fertilizers are recommended.
It should be noted that there is no need to rush in this matter - recurrent cold often occurs in the spring. If we activate growth ahead of time, we will lose the harvest.
With the arrival of warmth again, if the bushes are not yet covered, it is advisable to spray them with potassium humate «Bioresource» Effective ovary.
«Bioresource» will easily and gently relieve stress from plants, enhance the process of flower formation and preserve flowers.
At the beginning of mass budding, in warm weather, if the weather is from 20°C during the day, strawberry bushes should be sprayed with a biological insecticide.
It affects the digestive and nervous systems of insects, paralyzing all processes inside. Biopesticides are absolutely harmless to humans and the environment, as they are of biological origin.
However, such drugs have a cumulative effect, unlike chemicals that “bomb” immediately. And the waiting period for action may be a little longer and more than one processing will be required.
And if flowering has not begun, then the treatment is repeated after 7 days.
During mass flowering, all spraying is stopped.
However, it is possible and even desirable to apply biological fungicides at the root - a product based on living microorganisms that can reduce the development and spread of fungal pathogens on plants. For example, if the bushes began to rot.
3. Protect from birds - pull the net over the arches
By installing arcs over the ridges and pulling a net over them, the strawberries will be safe.
The lutrasil and spandbond - covering materials made of non-woven fabric – are good helpers in this matter.
Available in two colors: black and white.
By the way, black canvas is also perfect for mulching.
Lutrasil has several density options (marked with numbers). In order to cover and protect the berries, it is better to use «17» - the thinnest and lightest, however, it is more often used for frameless shelter in the spring-summer period, during hours of bright active sun, in the event of a sudden, but not severe cold snap.
«30» protects against frost down to minus 7 degrees; it is used as a covering material for stretching over a frame or in a frameless manner.
Care for strawberries properly in June. And then a good harvest of large and sweet berries will not take long to arrive.
