Beautiful lawn
Many people dream of a «fluffy carpet» in their gardens. But not everyone manages to grow such a lawn - often gardeners lack the skills: arranging a lawn is a painstaking task.
It is worth noting that in addition to aesthetic pleasure, the lawn also brings benefits: in the hot summer, a green lawn creates coolness. Numerous studies have shown that in hot weather the air temperature above the lawn is 3–5 °C lower than above the surface of bare soil - due to the intensive evaporation of moisture by the grass. In addition, 1 hectare of lawn produces from 5 to 19 tons of oxygen per year - the same as a hectare of forest.
Laying a lawn by yourself is not difficult.
But there are some moments:
- choose location
Lawn grasses love plenty of light. In shady places the grass becomes very stretched. And the lawn becomes unkempt.
It is highly advisable to choose flat areas.
ow-lying areas are strictly not recommended: in spring and after rain, water will stagnate, which will lead to rotting of the grass roots
- prepare the site
The first step is to exterminate the weeds as thoroughly as possible. Otherwise, they will grow through the lawn and become almost impossible to get rid of it. First of all, this concerns creeping wheatgrass, tansy, yarrow, and bedstraw.
There are two ways: hard and simple.
In a complex way, the soil is dug up using a shovel and the clods of ground are sorted out by hand, removing even the smallest pieces of weed roots.
Treating the area with a continuous action of herbicide is a simpler method. However, such chemicals are aggressive to all vegetation.
Removing the area from stones is also an important part of the process: with a clean lawn, the chances of damaging your feet and equipment during cutting are minimal.
The lawn can be laid throughout the warm season - from the end of April to the end of September. However, the best results are obtained by sowing in spring and summer.
The most important thing when sowing a lawn is that it doesn’t turn out to be «feast today and fast tomorrow». Special lawn seeders, for example, can be rented.
Before the grass sprouts, you need to water the lawn every day, and in hot weather - 2 times a day: in the morning and in the evening, while there is no hot sun scorching the grass. Then watering can be reduced to once a week.
Renewing an existing lawn and revitalizing it in the new season also requires increased attention.
First of all, the lawn should be cleared of debris and last year’s grass. A regular rake does not comb out all the dry grass. The ideal tool for this job is a special lawn rake.
Next step is aeration - piercing the turf at an angle of 45 degrees. This will improve ventilation in the turf and loosen the soil.
A small lawn can be cultivated manually: with a pitchfork or rake. There are even special sandals for aeration.
On large areas it is easier to use scarifiers and aerators.
For the first time this season, mow the lawn. The purpose of the first mowing is to make the lawn level and the same height. In spring, the lawn is mowed to 5-6 centimeters.
After the first mowing and after the ground has warmed up, the first fertilizing is performed.
The next step after all the basic lawn care work after winter is to reseed the grass in places where bald spots have formed.
Usually they wait for stable warm weather, since by this time it becomes clear where exactly reseeding is needed and where the bald spots will not heal on their own.
Seeds germinate better from the surface. And often they are mixed with crumbly soil and simply sprinkled on the desired areas.
The seeds remaining from the initial sowing are guaranteed to be used for 4 years - after that, they lose 10-15% of their germination capacity annually. The main thing is not to store them in a humid environment.
It happens that when the snow melts, mole holes are discovered. It is believed that moles do not cause serious damage, but, on the contrary, carry out deep aeration and digging.
«Mole soil» is quite loose, so you can simply collect it and level it over the lawn. Over time, the hole will close by itself.
It is not recommended to feed your lawn too early in the season.
In early spring, the grass’ energy is spent on root development. And if you apply fertilizer too early, it will quickly direct the plant’s energy to leaf development.
The best time is late spring, when green grass begins to actively grow: mid-to-late May.
Mineral fertilizers are simply necessary for the lawn. And in this case, «Bioresource» helps relieve stress, moderately accelerate growth and give strength to the future lawn.
Fertilizing should not be carried out in sunny, hot weather, otherwise it will burn the young shoots. Wet, cloudy days or the day after rain are recommended.
Ideally, the irrigation system provides for the introduction of liquid fertilizers. However, such systems have a high cost.
Using equipment that is not suitable for this task will ruin it - over time, mineral fertilizers will clog the nozzles.
A small area can be treated with a watering can. But what if you have a large lawn?
We offer an extra-useful life hack: spray potassium humate «Bioresource» onto granular mineral fertilizers.
The dose of granular fertilizer is taken per 1 sq.m.
The entire volume is placed in a suitable container – perhaps, a basin or bath. And the humate is applied directly from a spray bottle by spraying onto granules.
At the same time, potassium humate «Bioresource» is used undiluted.
We apply the humate until the granules are colored and so that there is no free excess liquid in the container.
Next, mix well. Leave to soak for a couple of minutes.
And we apply it directly onto the lawn in bulk.
And finally - a few simple rules for cutting the lawn
- do not cut the grass by more than a third
A radical cut can weaken it rather than strengthen it, so cut it gradually.
The optimal lawn height is 3-5 cm.
A lawn that is too tall will grow weeds, and a lawn that is too low will damage the soil.
- you need to cut before applying fertilizers
This is necessary so that after fertilizing the lawn quickly absorbs nutrients.
- do not cut the lawn when it is wet
The cutting will be poor quality and wet grass will stick to the deck and grass catcher.
- sharpen cutting knives in a timely manner
The sharp blades evenly grip the grass and carefully cut it to the desired length.
When laying a lawn, you need to be prepared for painstaking work. However, a fluffy soft green lawn can be a wonderful place to relax and enjoy for many years.
