Potato: planting and growing
No one doubts the nickname «second bread» - it’s hard to imagine any family’s diet without potatoes. What are the secrets to successfully growing a good potato crop?
The first stage – the selection of «parental« planting material – occurs in the autumn and is combined with potato digging. We immediately select good productive nests with smooth, healthy tubers. We do not take tubers of altered shape, this may be a sign of a viroid infection.
We store the seed material in a basement, preferably in boxes, at a temperature of 2-4 °С, trying not to injure it.
In the spring, around the first ten days of April, we take the “parent” tubers out of storage, sort them out, and place them in a warm, bright place for germination. Light is very important, in this case the seedlings form powerful and short, the potatoes turn green, which is very good from the point of view of resistance to diseases, especially viral ones.
We choose small tubers, about the size of a chicken egg.
The time of planting potatoes varies depending on the agroclimatic zone, weather and soil conditions. In the Chelyabinsk region, the most preferable dates are May 8-10, although adjustments must be made depending on the weather.
Optimal soils for potatoes are loose and fertile with a high content of exchangeable potassium.
To form a powerful green mass and a large, high-quality harvest, you need a large amount of minerals, especially potassium. It’s not worth saving on them.
As a rule, when planting, complex mineral fertilizers are applied to the holes. Potatoes respond very well to foliar feeding with humates.
Potassium humate «Bioresource» contains a complex of potassium humates and fulvates and microelements: manganese, copper, zinc, boron, molybdenum, and cobalt. The component composition of potassium humate «Bioresource» is such that even in small concentrations it actively affects the growth processes of potatoes.
As a result, the use of such a growth stimulator on potato seedlings promotes their better development, optimizes the consumption of minerals, and also increases resistance to stress.
Hilling is very important for potatoes: it improves air access to the underground part where the tubers are formed. This procedure should be carried out at least twice during the summer: when the bushes are 15-20 cm high and 2-3 weeks after the first hilling, before flowering. At this stage, the soil is poured so as to form a ridge 15-20 cm high. Let’s tell you a secret, if you immediately plant the potatoes in the ridges, the hilling process will be easy and simple.
By the way, immediately at the moment of hilling, the potatoes may fill stress. Especially if the procedure is carried out in the hottest part of the day. Therefore, experienced potato growers hill up the plantings either in the evening, when the heat subsides, or in cloudy weather, after rain. But to reduce the risk of developing stress, carry out additional leaf treatment with «Bioresource» potassium humate.
«Bioresource» should be used every time insecticidal treatments are carried out. Simply add a cap to the tank mix on a 10 liter sprayer.
We hope that our tips will help you get a good harvest of delicious potatoes!
